Strategic Rail Forum

The Eddington Transport Study disappointed advocates of High Speed Rail and played into the hands of critics who believe the concept to be flawed. One of the major – and often understated – benefits of High Speed Links (HSLs) is that they create significant capacity on the classic network. So is there life for HSL after Eddington, or do we have to come to terms with a succession of (relatively) low cost projects to deliver smaller capacity enhancements?

RE: Strategic Rail Forum

Of course we have HS1 and 2 and 3 and 4..... No question - it's just our repeating 5 year cycle of political ineptitude that stops long term, strategic projects being done. This shows on the 1953 Woodhead tunnel report - come on, we are out of the Beeching period now and need to develop railways as a national resource, not a plaything for accountants, consultants and politicos. Woodhead needs preserving ready to take HS2 otherwise it will go the same way as the strategically important tunnels under Nottingham that once carried HS-1 (aka Great Central)..
