Road passenger transport indices

The useful new indices invite further questions. How much of the increasing cost of bus and coach hire is due to fuel price increases, beyond the contol of the operator? What is the impact of BSOG (formerly Fuel Duty rebate) on bus operations that are in scope? Links to information showing how these costs and subsidies have varied over the period might be helpful.

Anyway, congratulations to Kirsten and others for getting the ball rolling!

Robert

Thanks for being the first to feedback!

Have you got any useful weblinks with respect to this? Or recommendations of useful information (books/journals) in the Knowledge Centre that members can access? If so, please post them here - I'm hoping that this area will turn into a mine of useful information!

RE: Road passenger transport indices

Bob

Here are some links with respect to BSOG and other topics:

http://www.cfit.gov.uk/docs/2007/psbi/index.htm#cfit - Commission for Integrated Transport response to government dated Oct 2007

http://www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/open/bussubsidy/ - DfT - the current consultation on bus subsidies - closes 5 June 2008

http://www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/aboutria/ria/bustravelassess.pdf - DfT on the need to protect revenue with bus passes now applicable nationwide

Bit off topic, but see the latest CILT reports, which will be posted in the next day or so, for some calculations of the impact of fuel increases on freight modes - plainly the impact will be less for buses/coaches as the fuel as a percent to total costs is, say, half that of rail freight and less than a third compared to road freight. The CILT reports are accessed here: http://www.ciltuk.org.uk/pages/cilt, where you will also be able to find the Q1 updates on the transport-related CPI and SPPI components very shortly.

Bye for now

Kirsten
