Lack of Professional Standing

Surveys regularly show that lack of professional standing is one of the main gripes for LGV and PCV drivers. Do you think it is possible to get the average motorist to appreciate the skills and responsibilities involved with driving large commercials, or is it only those that have done the job who can understand?

RE: Lack of Professional Standing

Having covered many tens of thousands of miles at the wheel of buses, coaches and trucks I can relate many tales of frankly reckless or irresponsible behaviour by motorists. I certainly wouldn't claim all LGV and PCV drivers are as professional as I would like, but most are and definitely deserve more respect on the road.

Training to drive any large commercial involves learning advanced driving techniques, including greater spatial awareness and anticipation. There can be very few LGV/PCV drivers that haven't encountered the problem of judging safe braking distances to a junction only to have a car pull in front of them and brake, seemingly oblivious to the fact that the commercial driver now has his/her braking distance halved! It's a good job most modern commercials have ABS...
