Hello Terna
As The Knowledge Centre Manager I am pleased to read that you are accessing the Knowledge Bank.
There are three databases within the Knowledge Bank that will provide you with access to journal articles that should help you with your research.
The Library Catalogue Search System allows you to search a database of over 38,000 items, around 28,000 of those items being journal articles. Once you have conducted your search within the Catalogue if you see articles that you would like to receive all you have to do is use the ‘add to cart’ facility which you will see under each of the result items. By clicking on this link you will add that particular item to the 'cart' or shopping basket. Once you have made your selections and added them to the cart you need to click on the link next to the cart in the top right hand corner of the catalogue screen - the link will be displaying the number of items you have selected. The next screen you will see will contain a small window with the word ‘request’ highlighted – click on the ‘go’ button and an email link to The Knowledge Centre will come up. Type in your email, and a message if you want, and click send. We will receive your request and send you the article(s) to your email in pdf format. If you would prefer the article(s) faxed or posted we are happy to do that, also. If you would like to borrow loan items, such as books or pamphlets, I suggest you use the message box to tell us what address you would like the books sent to. We do send items by Recorded Delivery so whatever address you supply someone will need to sign for the parcel when it arrives. I hope that will not be an inconvenience.
As a member of CILT you are able to borrow four books for a period of four weeks. If you would like to retain them for longer then, as long as there is not a reservation on any of the books, we are happy to extend the loan for you if you contact us.
As well as the Library Catalogue you will see a link to Business Source Corporate. (BSC). BSC is a database that contains over 4,500 business related electronic journals. The majority of the journals provide full text to their articles in either HTML or pdf format. This means that once you have conducted your search you do not have to contact The Knowledge Centre to obtain the articles you have found. You can download or print them off for yourself; you can even email them to a colleague. I highly recommend you familiarize yourself with BSC. There is a depth and breadth of journal content that, I am sure, will be of great benefit to your current, and future, research.
The third database, UK Reference Centre, is another electronic journal database from the same company as BSC so the search features and appearance are almost identical to BSC. It is, however, a smaller database. It contains less journals and their content is far more general in nature and country specific. BSC content, as well as being business centred is global in its scope. I would always recommend you use BSC before the UK Reference Centre. As with BSC, most of the content of UK Reference Centre is full text. If you find articles of interest you will be able to view the full article without having to contact The Knowledge Centre. So, to summarise, you have three sources of journal material within the Knowledge Bank. Any articles you find within the Catalogue you will need to request from The Knowledge Centre and there is an email facility within the Catalogue for that purpose. Both Business Source Corporate and the UK Reference Centre are electronic journal databases which provide full text access to the majority of their journal content that you can access directly from your own pc. BSC is by far the larger of the two databases and should always be searched first.
I hope that has answered your question. If you do have any further questions regarding the use of any of The Knowledge Centre resources or require help in searching any of the databases do not hesitate to contact me directly. My contact details are on the Website (click on 'Contact' at the top of any of the web pages - except this one!).
