Let it snow.....let it snow.......let it snow.......and then grit!

Hopefully this may start a discussion?

During the recent seasonal weather we have again heard comments in the media from the "general public" and road users about the effectiveness of the various Authorities' efforts to keep highways clear. The most amusing being from a "trucker" who had been travelling along the M4 westbound in the height of the snow in what he reported as "three solid lanes of traffic moving at 5mph" for about two hours. During that period he "never saw one gritter". Perhaps they should fly!

What are fellow members' views on the process of gritting/salting the highways? Doing the best we can or are the highway authorities failing to understand the seriousness of the situation and as a result not allocating sufficient resources (money) to the problem?

RE: Let it snow.....let it snow.......let it snow.......and then grit!

There was once a time when winter meant winter, and digging yourself out of your house and making a pathway to your neigbours house were normal.Sadly we now blame anyone and anything for everything. the idea of getting by and making do is now a bygone era.

However the current system of blame anything is at the 'ignore scientific fact' level. Chucking salt around doesnt melt snow, or stop it snowing. It requires traffic to drive on it to make it work, by gringing it into the ice.

naturally the next whinge will be house subsidance caused by over mining of salt.

Top tip, carry a flask and a sleeping bag in your cab, as you while away the time waiting for the gritter.
